Born in Newmarket in Q4-1894 [Newmarket 3b:504] to Thomas Henry and Sarah HUMM (née CATCHPOLE) of Grosvenor Yard, Newmarket.
1901 census...Albert [6] was at Grosvenor Yard, Newmarket with his father Thomas [44], a bricklayer; his mother Sarah [43] and sister Hilda [3]. All were born in Newmarket. 1911 census...Albert [16] was a newspaper seller, still living in the Grosvenor Yard, Newmarket with his parents and sisters Hilda May [10]; Jessey [8]and Edith Maude [6] and cousin Eleanor Maud LANGHAM. 3 children had died. The family address was Manor Place, Newmarket. That is the Grosvenor Yard corner with the High Street.
He enlisted in Hackney Baths, London. The Newmarket Journal of 10th July 1915 reported that he had been wounded near Ypres on 24th April 1915, from which
injury he obviously recovered.

Albert seems to be the only casualty of the 3rd (City of London) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers that week. Just possibly he was serving with another battalion but the other battalions seem also to be having a "quiet" time. There is some confusion regarding Albert's army story. So far it has not been possible to ascertain exactly where he might have been killed, but the Germans were retreating at the time and the front was changing all the time. Initially he was buried in Bretencourt military cemetery, but this was closed, then emptied and the graves concentrated to Gommecourt Wood new Cemetery in 1919. |
